Coffee With A View

“Good communication is just as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.”

~Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Coffee is very important to us on our travels. We try to find a great place with a view.  Armed with a guidebook, we find a local place to hang and figure out just what our day will be like.   I use trip advisor to find the best coffee places.

So I decided that I’m going to feature one of our favorite coffees and cafes from our travels.

This week I’m sharing a cup from Joe Mama’s in Avila, California, just a few miles north of Pismo Beach.    We had no idea what to expect in Avila.  It just looked like a great place to explore on the map.  It’s located right on the ocean and at the end of the road before it turns inland to San Luis Obispo.   Just before arriving, I trip-advisored “best coffee in Avila, California”.  Joe Mama’s came up right away.

Review after review came up that this place has awesome coffee, made perfect for each individual:

“The morning coffee and pastries at the coffee shop were the best. Without a doubt, the BEST scones I’ve ever had. Bonnie and the other Baristas were super friendly.”

“Coffee… Amazing; Service… Unparallelled; Views… Breathtaking; Ambiance… Comfortable!  If you want to enjoy Avila Beach like a true local Joe Momma’s is a must!  They have a great breakfast, the best coffee I have ever had anywhere but Seattle and the employees all go out of their way to make you feel like a local!!!”

“I love this place!! Went here 2x in one weekend and wished there was one near us.  They  have an Organic Roasted beans from Costa Rica called Intelligusta. It is bold and very Aromatic. The Iced Mocha was very refreshing, especially on a hot day. The seating upstairs is plentiful and very Comfortable with Wireless internet accessiblity. The people are very Friendly and very Lax.  I witnessed a huge line, and everyone waiting did not seem to mind because the product is that good.”

So we arrived.  They did take each cup of coffee very seriously.  Made individually for each person in a special coffee machine called a Clover.  A sign on the bar asked for your patience.  Another sign reminded you that this is not Starbucks.  We waited and enjoyed the smell of the ocean mixed with the smell of coffee.  We loved the fog and coolness that was so welcome after a hot dry Colorado summer.  And finally….here it is… the perfect Mocha, with beautiful coffee art as well!  And so delicious!

Joe Mama’s on a foggy day!

The beach is just out the front door.  We had to come back the next day, too!

So if you ever find yourself in Avila, California, make your way down the beach main street to Joe Mama’s Coffee (310 Front St Avila Beach, CA 93424).

  1. Personally, I don’t think coffee tastes better anywhere else than on a beach. When we visited San Fran a few years ago, this was a great start to the day. Mmmmm. Love the name Joe Mama’s… lol. I know someone who actually dated someone named Joe Mamie LOL! Seriously… was his real name!

Love your pics…. looks sooooooooooooo yummy!
